Shrek Falls Short, MacGruber Flops

Forever After pulls in only half the crowd of Shrek 3.

The Shrek franchise may have run its course. Despite inflated ticket prices, ticket sales for the opening weekend of Shrek Forever After were down 41 percent from the last episode, Shrek the Third, which opened with $121.6 million. The animated ogre is expected to have legs though, as it’s the only family fare available Memorial Day weekend, and is currently the only 3-D film in theaters. Meanwhile, MacGruber set a record—with an anticlimactic $4.1 million and was the lowest-opening film based on “Saturday Night Live” skits.
