The notorious Mafia “boss of bosses” Salvatore “Toto” Riina has died at the age of 87. Riina was in prison, serving 26 life sentences for his work masterminding a plan to assassinate law enforcement and Italian prosecutors who were working to bring down the Sicilian Mafia. He was captured in 1993. His health began deteriorating after two surgeries, and he was recently placed in a medically induced coma. Riina’s condition sparked a public debate in Italy over whether he should be afforded the mercy of hospice care on his deathbed, despite his long, extraordinarily violent history.
