An American woman who had been working in the South Pole for a year before falling ill was successfully rescued and brought to New Zealand on Monday. Renee-Nicole Douceur, who was working at a research station, asked her employer, Raytheon Polar Services, to be airlifted out in August after having what doctors think may have been a stroke. (A second opinion is that she could have a tumor.) Her request was denied due to weather conditions. Douceur, of Seabrook, N.H., told The Early Show that she’s “elated” to be in New Zealand, but still experiencing difficulty with her vision and speaking.
