Slain Maryland police officer Jacai Colson, who was one of the six cops that responded to an “unprovoked” ambush outside of a police station Sunday, was possibly killed by friendly fire. A preliminary autopsy on the 28-year-old officer revealed the inadvertent shot, police said. Officials said the suspected gunman, 22-year-old Michael DeAndre Ford, “intended to die at the hand of a police officer” during the attack with his two brothers that day and had dictated his last will on a cellphone video just minutes before. Ford allegedly fired rounds while his brothers took cellphone videos of the event. Four officers, including Colson, opened fire in response. “It is in this confusion we believe the errant round struck Detective Colson,” Prince George County Police Chief Hank Stawinski said. The “violence was all captured on cellphone and surveillance video,” police said. Stawinski would not name the officer whose round hit Colson. Ford’s brothers, 21-year-old Malik Ford and 18-year-old Elijah Ford, are also in custody. ABC News reports that all three of the men are expected to be charged with second-degree murder, six counts of attempted first-degree murder, nine counts of use of a handgun in the commission of a felony, and additional charges.
