European Union sources said that Spain could request a bailout this weekend, according to Reuters, which would make it the fourth euro-zone country to do so. German Chancellor Angela Merkel said that her country did not pressure Spain into the announcement, which is expected to come Saturday afternoon. “It’s down to the individual countries to come to us,” Merkel said of the decision to request assistance. “That has not happened so far, and therefore [we] will not exert any pressure.” In Spain, a government spokesman said Friday that she was not aware of any plan for the EU to recapitalize the country’s banks.
