Spider-Man: Homecoming had the second-biggest opening in the Spider-Man franchise and easily claimed first place in theaters this weekend, with $117 million domestically and $140 million internationally. The latest film in the franchise sees Tom Holland take on the role of a 15-year-old Spider-Man struggling to come to terms with his superhero potential. The film saw Sony Pictures team up with Marvel Studios after its previous two Spider-Man flicks fell short of expectations at the box office. The joint effort proved to be successful, as the latest installment had the best debut since 2007’s Spider-Man 3. The animated comedy Despicable Me 3 came in second place in theaters, with $34 million domestically, and action flick Baby Driver claimed third place with $12.8 million.
