Spotify Sued for $1.6 Billion for Copyright Violations

Spotify was hit with a $1.6 billion lawsuit last week alleging the streaming-music service is using thousands of songs without a license or compensation, the Hollywood Reporter revealed Tuesday. Wixen Music Publishing administers song compensitions for Tom Petty, Rage Against the Machine, and others. Spotify doubted whether Wixen was authorized by its clients to sue. Spotify has previously claimed copyright law doesn't apply to streaming because it does not reproduce or distribute copyrighted material.
