What century is it, again? Three California college students have been charged with a hate crime after forcing a bike lock around their black roommate’s neck and plastering their living quarters with a Confederate flag, Nazi symbols, Hitler photos, and a whiteboard scrawled with the N-word. They had also nicknamed him “Three-Fifths,” a reference to the infamous Three-Fifths Compromise, and then changed it to “Fraction” when he objected. “I am outraged and saddened by these accusations,” San Jose State president Mohammad Qayoumi said. The students were charged with misdemeanor hate crime and battery, and face a maximum of one year in county jail if convicted.
