A new study by the Williams Institute, a UCLA Law-based think tank that is dedicated to the advancement of sexual-orientation and gender-identity law, more than 25,000 transgendered citizens may face disenfranchisement caused by state voter ID laws. Those who live under a different gender—and often different identity—than the one assigned to them at birth encounter difficulties acquiring accurate legal identification. The study found that 41 percent of transgendered Americans surveyed don't have an updated drivers license, 74 percent don't have an updated passport and 27 percent said they don't have any formal identification that acknowledges their new gender.
