More changes coming down the Nile: The notoriously ruled-by-a-tight-fist Sudanese have begun organizing anti-government protests, a sign of real change in the Arab world. While many speculated the Egyptian protests would spread, Egypt’s southern neighbor, Sudan, has not been seen as one of the next countries to rise up. Sudan has been ruled since 1989 by Omar Hassan al-Bashir, with the support of the upper ranks of the military. But many young Sudanese see now as the time for change, taking to social media to rally for their cause. Meanwhile, protests are also planned in Syria this weekend, despite some analysts saying there has been “no appetite” for regime change in the region.
