Although her earrings and bandana headband were quite '80s, Miley Cyrus exemplified the incredibly current monokini trend during her performance at the 2010 Much Music Awards in Canada on Sunday. While the original monokini, designed by Rudi Gernreich, featured a bikini bottom and no material above the waist—leaving the female wearing the garment topless—the 21st century style is shockingly far more modest. The 2010 look is essentially a bikini with a strip of material connecting the lower half to the top half—for those days your belly button isn’t looking its best.

In an effort to enliven the tired solid colored string bikini, Chloé showed off this white triangle top and bottom with the delicate detail of scalloped edges for their Spring/Summer 2010 collection. The added touch is particularly popular this season with designers like Vix and 3.1 Phillip Lim also following suit with similar a similar oscillating wave-like style in their swimwear options this season.

The single-shoulder look has been a mainstay over the past couple years—from the Golden Globes to high fashion runways. But now, the trend is making a splash in the water with a new crop of asymmetrical swimwear. When Emilio Pucci unveiled his Spring/Summer 2010 collection in Milan in September, one model stood out in this one-shoulder nude cut out bathing suit that shows just enough skin.

If any season lends itself to bright colors, it’s certainly summer and the perfect way to catch some rays is in neon swimwear. While shooting Just Go With It in Hawaii in May with Adam Sandler, Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue cover model Brooklyn Decker strutted out into the water in this glowing yellow string bikini. And if anyone knows what’s hot when it comes to beachwear, it’s certainly Decker.

Gucci showed off the James Bond-channeling swimwear trend with their Spring/Summer 2010 look at Milan Fashion Week in September. This season’s ubiquitous look may be nothing new for deep sea divers who are used to scuba suits, but high fashion designers have taken the signature thick zippers and latex look to a new level for this coming summer.

As '90s fashion continues to make a comeback this year, it’s no surprise the grommeting and other grunge details of the decade have surfaced everywhere—from boots to blazers to bikinis. Lady Gaga sported a spiky and skimpy swim top while watching the New York Mets play at Citi Field earlier this month. Vix offers a slightly tamer take on the heavy metal swimwear trend that isn’t quite as dangerous as the “Alejandro” singer’s version.

Many designers are going old school with their swimwear this season, offering a silhouette many of us haven’t seen in 60 years. Waist lines are moving up a few inches and halter tops are making a comeback as retro-style swimwear is likely to dominate both pool and beachside this summer. Though the shape is also offered with many one-pieces, Diane von Furstenberg had this black chic set of bloomers to offer in her Spring/Summer 2010 collection at Bryant Park in September. The trend is already registering on celebrities’ radars— Taylor Swift looked like a pin-up girl in her red sunglasses and not so itsy bitsy teenie weenie high-waisted polka dot bikini in the Bahamas this past weekend.

Even bad girls can look sweet by adding a little ruffle to their swimwear this summer. 90210’s resident mean girl AnnaLynne McCord donned a bright pink, ruffled triangle bikini in Malibu while True Blood temptress Anna Paquin made a splash on the cover of Self magazine in a floral ruffled bikini for their July 2010 issue.

As soccer aficionados from around the globe continue to gather in South Africa for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, many female fans have opted to expose more skin as a canvas to show their support for their hometown. An Italian fan, adhering to this season’s aforementioned leopard print style, showed off her Italian pride at Ellis Park Stadium on Thursday.
