Summit Holds Risk for 2010 Midterms

In a six-hour televised event, President Obama and a bipartisan group of lawmakers will meet Thursday to discuss health-care reform. But as the debate enters another stage, it contains risks for both Democrats and Republicans in the 2010 midterm elections, the Los Angeles Times reports. At this point in the calendar, the Democrats had hoped health care would be behind them and battling unemployment would be their number one priority. Republicans may see little reason to play along Thursday as they believe standing against health care will lead to success at the polls. For the Dems, it may be do or die. "Failure to pass a bill of any kind presents real problems for us in the midterms," said one Democratic strategist.
