Director J.J. Abrams and producer Steven Spielberg's highly anticipated Super 8 had a solid opening weekend at the box office, finishing with $37 million. It fell closely behind other recent sci-fi flicks like District 9, which took in $37.4 million in its opening weekend, and Cloverfield which topped them both with $40.1 million. Super 8 has so far been a hit with critics and was particularly popular with adults (71 percent of the audience was at least 25 years old.) X-Men: First Class, starring James McAvoy, Kevin Bacon, and January Jones, dropped 55 percent from its debut last weekend, but did better than three out of the last four X-Men movies. The Hangover Part II and Pirates of the Caribbean continued to stay strong in the top 5.
