Supreme Court Blocks North Carolina Redistricting Order

The U.S. Supreme Court on Thursday blocked a federal court ruling which ordered North Carolina to re-draw its congressional districts, which the lower court had ruled were gerrymandered in a way that benefits Republicans. David Lewis, a North Carolina Republican lawmaker, was candid about the goal of the gerrymandered electoral map: “I think electing Republicans is better than electing Democrats. So I drew this map to help foster what I think is better for the country.” Republicans currently hold 10 of North Carolina’s 13 House seats, despite having won over just 53 percent of the state’s voters in 2016.
