A man was arrested Monday morning following an explosion outside a federal building in Manhattan that houses dozens of government agencies. Initial investigations suggested the suspect had set off fireworks in a garbage can outside 26 Federal Plaza, where the FBI, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, and federal immigration court all have offices. During President Donald Trump’s second term, the building has become the site of protests in response to federal immigration agents making violent arrests outside court hearings on the 12th floor. It was also evacuated last summer after a mysterious white powder was found in five envelopes in the mailroom. On Monday, the fire department responded to put out flames bursting from the trash can, and video showed heavy smoke in front of the building. No injuries were immediately reported. Police urged people to avoid the area and said they should expect traffic delays, disruptions, and street closures nearby.
