We live lives that are more and more introverted and indoors. Internet-centric existences that make it easy to forget feeling of wind in our hair or unadulterated beauty of sunrise over an unfamiliar landscape. But that exhilaration is right there at our fingertips, just outside the door and around the corner, almost as easy to get to as it is to click that friend request or Google the new person in the office.
Going Out is Going In came about largely by accident. It wasn’t meant to be an epic undertaking, but at every turn it grew larger and events serendipitously unfolded in such a way that now it’s so much more than a photo ‘zine. 150+ high quality pages, 10 photographers, 40+ bands, events in two cities… What was going to be just a fun art project between friends has evolved to take on a life of its own.
So what is it?
A collaboration between some of the best adventure and documentary photographers out there. Page after page of images designed to inspire viewers to take a break, hit the road, and get outside, and at the same time raise awareness and money for an amazing group of people who are toiling tirelessly to literally save the world. Thanks to the generosity of Patagonia, who paid to produce the book, every penny from the sales of Going Out is Going In goes directly to support 1% for the Planet, a nonprofit organization who oversee and weave together a global network of businesses who donate 1% of annual sales to a vetted network of environmental and sustainability nonprofits.
Featuring the work of Ben Moon, Chris Burkard, Sam Horine, Becca Skinner, Forest Woodward, Tamara Hastie, Jeff Johnson, Andy Mann, James Q Martin, and James Joiner and edited and curated by Joiner and Johnson, each copy also comes with a free road trip mix tape with nearly 50 tracks from bands like Modest Mouse, Jack Johnson, the Head and the Heart, Dawes, Deer Tick, Bahamas, and many, many more.
