Syrian Forces Retake Rebel Town

Drive out remaining rebels with tanks.

After thousands of rebels and others fearing violence escaped to Turkey, Syrian troops moved into a rebel town in the north on Sunday. The remaining rebels were driven out with tanks and helicopter gunships, according to the Syrian state media. The bombardment of Jisr al-Shoughour started yesterday, when the Syrian military invaded the countryside and set fire to fields. Violence escalated on Sunday, as troops resorted to heavy gunfire and bombs during a brief battle with a few remaining rebels who were eventually forced out. Turkey has welcomed Syrian residents and rebuked Syria's savage regime, a sign that the Syrian regime may soon be outnumbered and forced to heed calls for an end to violence.
