Criticism from the United Nations and the Arab League is doing nothing to discourage Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. Syrian forces attacked Homs, the epicenter of the protests, with tanks and jets, killing an estimated 20 people and wounding 53, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. The strikes follow an especially deadly day in Syria, when around 35 or 40 people were killed by security forces. U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon condemned the killings, calling the crackdown “alarming.”
