One more death has been attributed to a defective Takata airbag, according to The New York Times. The victim was allegedly using a hammer to repair a parked 2001 Accord at a home near Miami, and the person activated the airbag inflater. The bag blew up, and the person died the following day, in June 2016, the newspaper reports. It's not clear what repairs were being attempted on the vehicle. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the fatality was the 12th in the United States—and 17th in the world—linked to the auto manufacturer’s airbag inflaters. “This latest tragedy is a reminder of the serious nature of this recall,” a spokesman for the safety agency said. “It’s essential to safety that high-risk inflaters are replaced immediately.”
