A team of gunmen stormed the British Council office in Kabul on Friday, killing at least 12 people. The heavily armed attackers entered the compound of the cultural institution and were all killed, but not before eight Afghan policemen, three security guards, and one New Zealand security official died in the gunfight. Shortly before the attack on the compound, a car bomb was detonated in a town square. The Taliban claimed responsibility and said the attack was to mark the anniversary of Afghanistan's independence from Britain in 1919.
