The Taliban said Tuesday that it had won over former Afghan president Burhanuddin Rabbani's trust so they could kill him. Rabbani, the head of a council trying to end the Afghan war, was killed Tuesday by a suicide bomber, and the Taliban said the killer had gone to Rabbani’s home for the peace talks. The Kabul police chief said the explosives had been hidden in the killer’s turban. Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said two “articulate” and “well-trained” fighters built a relationship with Rabbani, and Mujahid said they “frequently” met with Rabbani at his home. While the Taliban has been known to exaggerate its exploits, Mujahid’s description of Rabbani's home broadly matched other accounts of the assassination.
