Tear Gas Used on Migrants Near Macedonia

Police in Macedonia reportedly fired tear gas and stun grenades Friday in an attempt to drive back thousands of migrants at the Greek border. Macedonia declared a state of emergency Thursday, leaving an estimated 3,000 migrants to sleep near the closed southern border. Riot police began dispersing tear gas on crowds from behind the border’s barbed wire as people gathered and demanded passage, Reuters reports. At least eight people were hurt during the clash, according to Greek police. An estimated 44,000 migrants have traveled through Macedonia in an attempt to reach the EU over the past two months.
