A teenager has been found guilty of the rape and murder of a 23-year-old physiotherapy student on a Delhi bus last year. The brutal rape thrust the issue of women’s rights in India into the global spotlight. The young man, who was six months shy of his 18th birthday at the time of the crime, received a three-year sentence, the maximum punishment for a juvenile. Advocates as well as the victim’s family argued he should have been tried as an adult and faced the death penalty, as the remaining three defendants will.
