Russian Tennis Federation president Shamil Tarpishchev was banned for one year on Saturday after making fun of the Williams sisters. Tarpishchev called Serena and Venus the “Williams brothers” and said they were “scary” to look at when he appeared on a Russian television show on Friday. In addition to the ban, the WTA fined him $25,000. Serena Williams slammed Tarpishchev on Sunday at the WTA Finals tournament in Singapore. His remarks were "extremely sexist, racist and bullying,” said Williams. “In this day of age, 2014 for someone with his power, it's really unacceptable to make such bullying remarks." Tarpischchev apologized for his remarks due to WTA demands, but later defended himself, claiming he was on a “humorous show.” Tarpishchev also serves on the International Olympic Committee, which has yet to issue any comment or punishment.
