In an operation worthy of James Bond, a senior member of the Somali terror group al Shabab was secretly brought to New York Monday night to stand trial in civilian court, officials say. Ahmed Abdulqadir Warsame’s arrival in New York follows months of questioning at sea on a U.S. Navy ship, where he reportedly divulged “valuable intelligence” about al Qaeda operations in Somalia and Yemen (al Shabab is closely aligned with the group). Warsame talked for weeks after his April arrest until being read his Miranda rights—at which point he clammed up, officials said. He was brought to New York Monday, and charges were unsealed Tuesday. He will be tried in civilian court—a potentially controversial choice—and will face life in prison if convicted.
