Texas Gov. Greg Abbott unveiled a comprehensive school safety plan on Wednesday, in the wake of the Santa Fe school shooting that left eight students and two teachers dead. While announcing his 40-page, 40-strategy plan, Abbott hinted at the possibility of calling a special legislative session to implement his ideas more quickly. “If there is consensus on some laws that could be passed, I am open to calling a special session,” he said during the announcement. Abbott’s recommendations include expanding a mental health screening program, allowing teachers optional access to training and firearms, and implementing stricter child-access prevention laws.
