Texas Lawmaker Gets Death Threats After Calls for Trump’s Impeachment

A black Texas lawmaker says he’s begun receiving death threats after calling for President Trump’s impeachment. U.S. Rep. Al Green played audio recordings of the threats at a town hall meeting on Saturday, saying he received threats of lynching at his offices in Washington and Houston. One caller hurled racial insults at Green before saying the lawmaker would find himself “hanging from a tree” if he continued to push for Trump’s impeachment. Another caller said Green would be the one impeached in a “short trial” before he’s hanged. “We are not going to be intimidated. We are not going to allow this to cause us to deviate from what we believe to be the right thing to do and that is to proceed with the impeachment of President Trump,” Green told supporters. The threats come after Green said on the House floor on Wednesday that he believes Trump committed obstruction of justice and should face impeachment for it. Trump is facing backlash from some lawmakers over a series of recent negative reports on his firing of former FBI director James Comey, who was in charge of the ongoing investigation into the Trump campaign’s ties to Moscow. Citing memos from Comey, The New York Times reported last week that Trump tried to persuade the ousted FBI director to drop his investigation into former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn.
