Disney’s The Help continued to please moviegoers this weekend despite Hurricane Irene’s run up the East Coast. The drama about a Southern white woman who writes a book about black housekeepers in the pre-civil-rights era took the No.1 spot at the weekend box office. The film brought in $14.3 million for a total of $96.6 million since it opened. Two new films opening this weekend fell short of the Disney hit, with Sony’s Colombiana, starring Zoe Saldana, bringing in $10.3 million, and Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark, earning $8.68 million. The prequel Rise of the Planet of the Apes was steady at No. 4, earning $8.6 million for a substantial gross of $148.5 million.
