The stars are out tonight for music's biggest awards show, with a variety of big-name Grammy performers on the bill, including Paul McCartney, Jay-Z, and the Jonas Brothers. As has become an annual ritual, however, organizers are struggling to keep the show, whose ratings are in decline, relevant while the digital music era wreaks havoc on the basic concept of popular music, dividing fans up into smaller, more individualized groups and blocking the rise of megastars in the mold of Madonna, who bring in broad audiences.
