Star Wars: The Last Jedi topped the $1 billion milestone in worldwide ticket sales over New Year’s weekend, beating out Beauty and the Beast to become the highest grossing film of 2017. The space saga, starring Daisy Ridley and Mark Hamill, pulled in $52.4 million domestically and $120.4 million globally over the holiday weekend, claiming the top spot in theaters for the third weekend in a row. In less than three weeks, the latest installment in the Star Wars franchise raked in an estimated total of $517.1 million in North American ticket sales—making it the eighth-highest grossing domestic film of all time. Sony’s action-comedy Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle came in a close second this weekend, with $50.6 million in domestic theaters in its second weekend out.
