While most 3-year-olds were sporting their freshest new pair of sneakers as back-to-school season began, Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes’ daughter, Suri, kicked the toddler footwear trend up a notch with a pair of silver peeptoe heels in September 2009. Young Suri debuted the look while strolling around Boston, shopping with her mom, but soon took the trend overseas to Spain with pale pink Mary Jane heels and golden strappy-heeled sandals. “She loves my high heels,” Holmes said of the inspiration behind the trend her tiny tot started. “They are actually ballroom dancing shoes for kids… I found them for her and she loves them.”

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt’s daughter Shiloh caught the world’s attention from the day she was born with her light blond hair and sparkling blue saucer eyes. But while vacationing in France with her family last summer, the 3-year-old took her ultra-feminine features—including Jolie’s iconic lips—to the other end of the spectrum. Photos surfaced of Shiloh in cargo pants, a fedora, and black vest complete with sword. “She only w ants to be called John… It’s a Peter Pan thing,” Pitt told Oprah earlier. Shiloh took her adoration for the J.M. Barrie tale to a new level in February in France when she debuted a new, cropped haircut, revealing a darker shade of hair and an even more distinct tomboy style. During a recent rumored shopping spree with her dad in Paris, “Shiloh wanted only boy’s clothes,” a source told X17. Pitt reportedly gave into Shiloh’s penchant for pants over pearls when he proceeded to drop over $10,000 on the entire Spring/Summer 2010 Bonpoint boy’s collection for his daughter.

The 1-year-old stole the show at the Super Bowl when his father, New Orleans Saints MVP Drew Brees, hoisted him up on the field under raining confetti—an image that made the cover of Sports Illustrated. The young fan (his father is undefeated when Baylen is in the stands) also stood out for wearing kid-size headphones. Or, more precisely, “low-cost, low-tech earmuffs meant to protect his hearing from the stadium’s roar,” as The New York Times reported. It’s an important accessory. “For those kids who will be going to football games throughout their lives, as Drew Brees’ kids will, it’s a very big deal. A young, tender ear may not be able to withstand damage,” an audiology specialist told the paper. Indeed, sales of the earmuffs went up 40 percent after the game at Baby Banz, the company told The Times.

After Gwen Stefani turned her iconic style into clothing line L.A.M.B., and then launched a subsequent collection for little L.A.M.B.s, the singer-turned-designer didn’t need to release an ad campaign—she simply dressed her sons in the designs from platinum blond head to tiny toddler toe. Last April, 3-year-old son Kingston was spotted in some L.A.M.B. footwear. Forever Stefani’s favorite accessory, Kingston and 1-year-old Zuma were both on hand to view their mother’s 2010 collections. Last April in New York, Kingston donned a platinum blond mohawk identical to his mom’s for the launch of her spring 2010 collection and in February, for the debut of Stefani’s L.A.M.B. fall 2010 collection, Zuma rocked a black leather jacket, also matching the No Doubt frontwoman.

Nearly 50 years ago, Jackie Kennedy took her son, John F. Kennedy Jr., into Michael’s Children’s Haircutting Salon on Manhattan’s Upper East Side and the rest is hairstyle history. Patrons came into the Madison Avenue shop, asking for “the John-John cut,” as The New Yorker reported. The longer, shaggier style, catapulted by the mop-top trend accompanying Beatlemania in the ‘60s, soon became a mom-request, kid-approved style nationwide. “It was my very first haircut that had the most lasting effect,” Mark Katz wrote of his man crush on JFK Jr. “[My mom] took me to the stripe-poled barbershop in the local shopping plaza and asked the old Italian gentleman for a ‘a John-John’ then pulled out a collection of photographs showcasing the front, side and back of John-John’s head.”

The daughter of Michelle Williams and the late Heath Ledger is already a quintessential New York City kid at the ripe old age of 4—she seems to have a wardrobe full of boots for trekking through the city in any and all weather. Matilda has been photographed walking to school in a hot pink version of classic Hunter rain boots, and in colder weather heading out in a pair of Uggs. Like her style-icon mother, Matilda also mixes it up with her shoes, such as with this pair of floral printed Dr. Martens.

Even the littlest fashionistas can take some knocks now and then, so it’s never too early to learn self-defense. Or at least that seems to be the motto for Heidi Klum and Seal’s three older children Johan, Henry, and Leni. The family is often seen coming and going from Taekwondo, and Klum now brings along her youngest daughter, Lou, since her birth in October. Most recently Johan was seen suited up with a red belt, one of the highest levels possible in the sport.

David and Victoria Beckham’s three sons already take after their football-playing father, and are almost always seen clad in athletic gear and over-the-top hairstyles, including mohawks. The boys are rarely seen without sneakers and have recently started eying the line their dad designed for Adidas. “My sons definitely are after some of the sneakers,” Beckham told Vanity Fair. “They are already starting to get to the age now where they can start fitting into quite a few of them.”

With free-spirited Kate Hudson and Chris Robinson as parents, and Goldie Hawn for a grandmother, it’s only natural that Ryder Robinson already has a well-established bohemian look—the 6-year-old has made shoulder-length hair his signature look since he was a toddler. Ryder is likely to take good care of his hair, given that Hudson paired up with hairdresser David Babaii in 2008 to launch a line of eco-friendly hair care products.

Nearly 38 million people watched Barack Obama’s inauguration in January 2009, but the eyes of fashion-forward young viewers (and their parents) were on Sasha and Malia’s bright winter coats from J. Crew. Decked out in royal blue and pastel pink, the Obama girls garnered plenty of notice for the retailer’s kid’s line, crewcuts, whose adult label is a favorite of the first lady. J.Crew jumped on the free publicity, and when the Obamas headed to Moscow later that year, sent out a release stating "Malia & Sasha wore J. Crew and crewcuts as they exited Air Force One in Moscow—stylish in their trenches, they also accessorized with ballet flat shoes.” (The silk and twill trenches retailed for $298 and $169, respectively, and the girls’ classic navy and black ballet flats were $108 and $98.) Although the preppy store caught some minor flak for trading on the young girls’ time in the spotlight, it seems to have paid off. J.Crew’s third-quarter profit more than doubled from last year, a feat during a recession that prevented most retailers from breaking even.

David Arquette and Courteney Cox’s daughter Coco is lending a helping hand to Propr, her father’s new casualwear clothing line produced with musician Ben Harper, Arquette said 5-year-old Coco is a budding fashionista and, while she has a lot of clothes, “ she designed her own beautiful red dress. And it has a little heart-shaped top. It was very elegant, something you could wear tonight.” Although he claimed her design may be produced for Propr’s spring line, a glance at the online store, whose collection is doubling to 15 stores this year, yields no such dress. At least she’s influencing her dad in one way—the notoriously eclectic Arquette told the New York Post he transitioned from a staple on worst-dressed red-carpet lists to a more subdued style because he doesn’t want to embarrass his daughter.

The daughter of Nicole Richie and Joel Madden not only inspired the name of her mother’s clothing line, House of Harlow, but leaves fashion bloggers and tabloids in a tizzy every time she steps out with a new ensemble. She seems to be especially enthralled with shoes—the L.A. store Kitson gave Harlow a pair of white crystal-studded Converse when she was born and the 2-year-old was recently spotted in chic silver Mary Janes. Last year, the parents of fashionable tots had the chance to bid on Harlow’s hand-me-downs, including a Ralph Lauren romper and infant moccasins, to benefit the Richie-Madden Foundation.

The original style icon for little girls shot to fame in the 1930s, and her signature ringlet curls were soon sported by thousands of girls under the age of 10. Shirley Temple’s mother was inspired by actress Mary Pickford’s long locks, and chose to style the 7-year-old’s hair into 56 precise curls for each film. Decades later, Susan Olsen made the hairstyle popular again with her role as Cindy Brady— “the youngest one in curls.”
