Smoke rises after a bomb exploded near a park where Gujarat's chief minister and Hindu nationalist Narendra Modi, the prime ministerial candidate for India's main opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), was to address a rally. At least six crude bombs exploded near where tens of thousands of people were gathered to hear Modi speak, police said.

Protesters burn cardboard and refuse as they demonstrate against a lack of housing and other services outside provincial government buildings. Hundreds looted shops, overturned garbage bins, and smashed car windows as police struggled to contain a mob rampaging through the heart of South Africa's top tourist city. Riot police in full body armor cordoned off roads in the city centre, where a large crowd, many wearing ruling ANC regalia, were protesting against a lack of state housing in the only metropolis governed by the official opposition.

Some 68 Lebanese, mostly from poor areas in the north of the country, were aboard an Australia-bound boat when it sank Sept. 27 off the coast of Java.

Bulgaria is a gateway to the European Union for those fleeing Syria via Turkey, many crossing the border illegally to seek asylum. The country has asked and was promised EU aid to deal with the refugee influx.
