Ranking in the tens of thousands, Thai protesters swarmed Bangkok on Sunday, demanding Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra’s resignation ahead of the planned February election. Thailand’s main opposition party announced on Saturday that it will boycott the February 2 election, claiming the democratic system had been corrupted by Yingluck’s brother, Thaksin Shinawatra. "I hate Yingluck and I want to get rid of her because she does everything for her brother, not for Thai people," said a 79-year-old protester in Bangkok, Chaloey Thanapaisan. The power political machine of the Shinawatra family has won every election since 2001.
