Tillerson Sounds Alarm on Cuba Sonic Attacks, in Conflict With FBI

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson told the Associated Press that the U.S. would be “putting people intentionally in harm’s way” if it sent diplomats to Cuba, after they left in response to a series of reported sonic attacks. U.S. diplomats in Havana reportedly sustained injuries, some after hearing mysterious high-pitched noises in their homes, prompting the U.S. to pull most embassy workers from Havana in September. The U.S. government has not accused the Cuban government of being behind the incidents, and an FBI investigation has reportedly surfaced no evidence that the reported sound waves could have caused the injuries embassy workers reported. But in his interview with the Associated Press on Jan. 5, Tillerson implied that Cuba’s government could put an end to the incidents. “I still believe that the Cuban government, someone within the Cuban government can bring this to an end,” Tillerson said.
