Tim Gunn’s New Book, New York Fashion Week, Destricted and More Yes List Culture Picks

Each week, The Daily Beast scours the cultural landscape to choose three top picks. This week, Tim Gunn challenges Isaac Mizrahi, a new art film so scandalous it took four years to come to the U.S., and New York Fashion Week kicks off.

Tim Gunn Takes Aim

Just in time for New York Fashion Week, venerable Project Runway host Tim Gunn is releasing an etiquette guide that doubles as the dishiest book on fashion since The Devil Wears Prada. Golden Rules: Life’s Little Lessons for Making It Work is a lightning-fast and fun read—his story about Vogue editor Anna Wintour being carried down the stairs by her bodyguards after a fashion show is already legendary. Gunn told The Daily Beast’s Rebecca Dana he “fears retribution,” especially for spilling on Isaac Mizrahi, whom he portrays as a demanding, insufferable diva. The designer’s response? “Tim is a doll. I hope these stories help him sell his book.” They certainly won’t hurt—fans are clamoring for an up-close view of an often classist industry, and there’s no one better to make it work than Gunn.

Is This Film Art…or Porn?

‘Tis the season for film festivals, and Los Angeles is doing it right by kicking up controversy with a screening of the art/sex film series Destricted. Released in 2006 in the UK, it’s taken four years to come to the U.S., despite winning awards at a host of film festivals. The art-based film explores modernistic views of sex, sexuality, and pornography in film through the lenses of multiple directors, including Larry Clark ( Kids), artists Matthew Barney and Marina Abramovic, and photographer Sam Taylor-Woods. The Downtown Los Angeles Film Festival is screening the film now. For those curious onlookers who can’t make it, a DVD release is planned for November.
