Iconic political activist Tom Hayden, who led progressive anti-war and civil-rights movements throughout his life, died Sunday at the age of 76. His wife confirmed the news to the Associated Press. Hayden had suffered from heart issues and had fallen ill while attending the Democratic National Convention in July. During his early years, Hayden was a founder of Students for a Democratic Society, a defendant in the trial of the Chicago Seven following riots at the 1968 DNC, and a protester for peace who married fellow activist Jane Fonda. He later ran for the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate in California, in 1976, but lost to incumbent John V. Tunney; he eventually turned his attention to state politics and became a Democratic California assemblyman in 1982, serving for a decade before becoming a state senator from 1993-2000.
