Terrence Malick’s Tree of Life took home the Palme d’Or, the top honor, at the Cannes Film Festival Sunday, despite a mixed reception at its premiere. The famously reclusive Malick let the producers pick up the award for the drama, which stars Brad Pitt, Jessica Chastain, and Sean Penn. Kid With a Bike and Once Upon a Time in Anatolia tied for the Grand Prix, the runner-up to the Palme d’Or. Kirsten Dunst won Best Actress for her role in Lars von Trier’s Melancholia, a film overshadowed by its director's recent controversial Nazi jokes. Other awards went to Jean Dujardin for Best Actor in The Artist, Nicolas Winding Refn for Best Director of Drive, Joseph Cedar for Best Screenplay for Footnote and Prix du Jury went to Poliss.
