Troops Punished for Quran Burning

The U.S. military announced on Monday that troops involved in an incident of Quran-burning and a separate incident of soldiers urinating on corpses will be punished, though not prosecuted. An investigation conducted by the military found that 100 copies of the Muslim religion’s holiest book were burned by soldiers earlier this year. “However, I absolutely reject any suggestion that those involved acted with any malicious intent to disrespect the Quran or defame the faith of Islam,” said Brig. Gen. Bryan Watson in the military’s report. Afghan President Hamid Karzai called the actions of the Marine’s urinating on corpses “inhuman,” and it is unclear whether the punishments will satisfy calls for justice in the country.
