When President Trump on Monday promised to deliver an emergency declaration to fight the U.S. opioid crisis within “the next week,” he reportedly blindsided his own advisers, who knew of no such plan. “That is a very, very big statement,” he said Monday, to their alleged surprise. “It’s a very important step... We’re going to be doing it in the next week.” According to Politico, officials are now working quickly to attempt to develop an emergency policy within the next several days. “They are not ready for this,” one public-health advocate told the news outlet, after reportedly talking to some of the Health and Human Services officials who are working on the effort.
