President Trump on Wednesday claimed he did not “specifically” authorize the military operation in Niger that resulted in four soldiers dead. The botched mission has come under intense scrutiny as questions emerged over how the four men died and why they were ambushed by armed militants affiliated with the Islamic State. Asked whether he greenlit the operation, Trump said: “No, I didn’t. Not specifically. But I have generals that are great generals. These are great fighters. These are warriors... I gave them authority to do what’s right so that we win... I want to win. And we’re going to win.”
