The Jerry Sandusky sex-abuse scandal inspired the University of Michigan to be a little more transparent. The other Big Ten school had a sex scandal of its own back in December, when Stephen Jenson, the resident physician at the school’s hospital for studying pediatrics, was charged by federal prosecutors with possession of child pornography. Not unlike some top staffers at Penn State, one of the physician’s co-workers had reported seeing the pornography six months before he was charged and told one official who told another until at least eight employees had heard about the child porn—yet Jenson was not reported to the police. It wasn’t until Joe Paterno was fired amid the Sandusky scandal that Michigan officials revisited the Jenson case and, eventually, reported him to authorities.
