U.K. Election Dashes Hopes for a Second Scotland Secession Vote

Hopes for a second shot at independence for Scotland were dashed after the Scottish National Party lost 21 of its 56 parliament seats in the United Kingdom’s general election Thursday. The party, which has campaigned for secession as a key part of its manifesto, led an unsuccessful bid for independence in a 2014 referendum. Last year’s Brexit vote ignited calls for another secession referendum, after Scotland voted 62 percent to 38 percent to stay in the European Union.
