U.K. Minister: WhatsApp Must Turn Over Attacker’s Messages

U.K.’s home secretary says the attacker sent an encrypted message that intelligence services can’t access.

U.K. Home Secretary Amber Rudd said on Sunday that London attacker Khalid Masood used the messaging service WhatsApp, and that intelligence services are unable to access one of the messages because it was encrypted. Appearing on the BBC and Sky News, Rudd said WhatsApp and similar messaging apps should cooperate with intelligence services and provide necessary information. “We need to make sure that organizations like WhatsApp—and there are plenty of others like that—don’t provide a secret place for terrorists to communicate with each other,” Rudd said. Last year, Apple resisted the FBI’s requests to unlock an iPhone used by the man who carried out the terror attack in San Bernardino, California.
