U.N. Rebukes Syria Over Nukes

Country has stonewalled investigation into desert reactor.

The UN’s International Atomic Energy Agency reported Syria to the Security Council Thursday for obstructing an investigation into the a possible nuclear site. In 2007, Israel bombed and destroyed Dair Alzour, which allegedly housed a North Korean-designed reactor. After a 17-6 vote, the 35-nation IAEA board found Syria in “non-compliance” with its global non-proliferation rules following U.S. allegations last month. Russia and China were among the six who voted against the proposal. The vote comes in the midst of a slew of Western sanctions leveled at the country after its bloody crack-down on pro-democracy protests.
