The U.S. military revealed for the first time it has deployed 120 troops in Somalia since 2007 to help fight Islamic extremists. The admission goes beyond the Pentagon’s announcement that it had sent a handful advisors in October. A U.S. official said that the forces are "not involved in combat," but rather are advising and training Somali forces. The U.S. plans to increase its military presence to help the country combat threats from Islamist group al Shabaab. It will also increase funding to the Somali National Army.
