U.S. officials have revealed that the Obama administration is currently building secret drone bases in Africa and the Arabian peninsula, where they plan to execute counterterrorism operations as part of a new front on al Qaeda affiliates in Somalia and Yemen. Though al Qaeda forces have weakened in Pakistan—the terror group’s stronghold—officials are anxious about affiliate growth in other regions. WikiLeaks also released classified cables that say several alleged pirate-tracking American drones in the Seychelles are in fact “hunter-killer” weapons, though a U.S. military spokesman declined to say whether they’ve ever been armed.
