Richard Holbrooke, the U.S. special envoy to Afghanistan and Pakistan, has died, reports ABC News. Holbrooke had undergone surgery this weekend in an attempt to repair a torn aorta. The surgery, which was his second, was meant to improve circulation. Holbrooke was a diplomatic star for more than 45 years, and was nearing completion of a formal review of U.S. strategy in Afghanistan and Pakistan to be released Thursday. President Obama recently called Holbrooke a "towering figure" in U.S. foreign policy. He was 69 years old.
