U.S. Imposes Sanctions on Libya

Meeting with European partners on further penalties.

The U.S. is cutting Libya off: First it evacuated hundreds of Americans by ferry and closed its embassy, and now the Obama administration is unilaterally imposing sanctions. White House spokesman Jay Carney said earlier today that the U.S. was finalizing plans to impose sanctions on Libya in retaliation for Muammar Gaddafi’s violent crackdown on protesters, an order which Obama has now signed. Carney said the U.S. is also in talks with European partners on imposing additional, multilateral sanctions on the country.
