U.S. Lost 33,000 Jobs in September, Thanks to Hurricanes

The combined force of Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria derailed America’s seven-year hiring streak last month. U.S. employers lost 33,000 jobs in September, the first decline in the monthly economic bellwether in seven years, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported. Although analysts predicted the number would take a hit after the widespread disruption from the storms, the jobs figures were well below what was expected. The unemployment rate, however, did edge down to 4.2 percent. Average monthly wages were 2.9 percent higher than a year earlier.
