A security team on a U.S. Navy ship fired at a smaller craft while patrolling in the Persian Gulf, after the smaller vessel ignored warnings and rapidly approached. The USNS Rappahannock was off of Jebel Ali, about 30 miles southwest of Dubai and close to Iran’s maritime borders, when the incident took place. An official said that the shooting left one person dead and three others wounded. A Navy spokesman said in a statement, “In accordance with Navy force protection procedures, the sailors on the USNS Rappahannock used a series of non-lethal, preplanned responses to warn the vessel before resorting to lethal force.” The nationality of the smaller boat has not been announced.
